Referred to by many as Australia's nature island. Kangaroo Island offers a wonderful range of wildlife in pristine locations. The third largest island off the coast of Australia, almost half is virgin bush, Kangaroo Island is wildlife enthusiasts dream. Approximately a third of Kangaroo Island is either Conservation or National Park and in the absence of introduced species such as rabbits and foxes the native wildlife thrives.
The Island's diverse landscapes provide habitat for kangaroos, koalas, sealions, fur seals, wallabies, echidnas, platypus, goannas, 253 bird species (many rare or endangered), possums, bandicoots and even whales. Except for whales, which pass through in winter, these are present all year-round.
As a traveller to KI said "Looking for an off-the-beaten-path paradise? Try Australia's Kangaroo Island. The shopping's lousy, the disco's non-existent, but the scenery is spectacular and the flora and fauna unique."
