Lake Eyre & Flinders Ranges

A three day journey through the outback and over Australia's largest inland lake.

Outback Encounter has designed the ultimate flying adventure to view ‘Lake Eyre by air’. This three day/two night journey has been created to experience the extraordinary natural phenomena of water flowing into Lake Eyre.

Desert areas that were ravaged by dust storms just before Christmas are lush and green, with patches of brilliant wildflowers. The vast floodplains around Lake Eyre have been turned into wetlands brimming with life, and the birds have returned to breed.

Seldom do flooding rains reach Lake Eyre in the arid heart of the Australian continent, but it has now happened two years in a row, triggering a spectacular explosion of life in the region.

Departing Adelaide on your charter flight, the first leg of your journey, takes you to the Flinders Ranges. Here you will be greeted by your local guide for the journey, Ian Fargher. Ian and his wife Di own Angorichina Station, where you will stay for two nights in their beautiful homestead.

On the second morning rise early and continue your flight over diverse outback landscapes to Lake Eyre. The aerial sight of Lake Eyre is spectacular and even better viewed from your low flying single engine charter plane. Stop for lunch at the iconic Birdsville Hotel, before making your return journey to Angorichina Station.

Your final morning in the outback is at your leisure before your return flight to Adelaide in the early afternoon.

Day 1 Adelaide to Flinders Ranges
• Travel in C210 charter plane to Angorichina Station
• 1 nights’ accommodation in the homestead at Angorichina Station
• All meals & drinks are included on your tour

Your Lake Eyre outback adventure begins at Adelaide airport, where you board your private charter flight, a Cessna 210, and fly to the Flinders Ranges. Stretching north from Port Augusta into the sun-seared wilderness of South Australia’s deserts, the Flinders Ranges is one of the country’s most extraordinary outback regions.

You will be met on arrival by your local guide for the journey, Ian Fargher. Ian owns Angorichina Station with his wife Di, who is the fourth generation in his family to run sheep on the station, covering some 554 square kilometres.

After a brief orientation and light lunch at the station, you will be able to explore the station and surrounds. Take a rugged four wheel drive tour, or guided walk of the ancient Flinders Ranges. Observe the wildlife: emus, kangaroos, Yellow-footed Rock Wallabies and the abundant birdlife. Witness station activities such as mustering, sheep shearing and bore runs (seasonal) and become completely absorbed into the life of a working outback sheep station.

In the evening relax at the station and get ready for a splendid station dinner.

Day 2 Flinders Ranges to Lake Eyre return
• Flight over Lake Eyre, to discover the unique beauty of this rare natural phenomenon
• Escorted and flown by Ian Fargher; 4th generation Flinders Ranges station owner
• 1 nights’ accommodation in the homestead at Angorichina Station
• Breakfast and dinner included at Angorichina Station
• Lunch at Birdsville Hotel included on your tour

After a hearty breakfast, you will depart Angorichina Station and fly with Ian in a North Westerly direction over the dry salt lake of Lake Torrens, encounter landscapes of desert plains, magnificent land forms and meandering creek beds. Land at Muloorinna Station and see the flowing artesian bore, which spits out hot water into the wetlands of the Frome River. Depart Muloorinna and then continue on to Lake Eyre.

Lake Eyre, Australia's largest inland lake is situated in north east South Australia and is the lowest point in Australia. It rarely has water flowing into it. The lake has had complete fills only three times in the past 160 years with the last significant fill being back in 1974. Partial fills occurring every five to ten years. Water bird and fish life abound at Lake Eyre when significant volumes of water arrive. When the lake is 80% full of water, there are up to 85 different varieties of bird life and millions of birds to look at.

Continue your journey to Birdsville where you are able to enjoy an Aussie pub lunch at the iconic outback Hotel. If time permits you may like to walk over to the Birdsville Museum which provides an interesting perspective on outback life and a look into yesteryear.

On return to Angorichina Station, fly over Coongie Lakes to view the prolific birdlife that flocks to the region with the arrival of water. From here you will fly to the famous Dig Tree where you are able to land. Proceed with your aerial journey over Innamincka, the Strezlecki Creek and the rugged Northern Flinders Ranges including Freeling Heights, the Mawson Plateau and Arkaroola.

In the evening enjoy the outback hospitality of your hosts over dinner.
